A comment about a photo I took this last week got me thinking about how important it is for anyone endeavoring to create quality art and design and to avoid stopping after achieving one workable solution.

My sister commented that one of my vacation photos looked like a painting. This was not a coincidence. Despite having sold all my SLR camera equipment a few years ago, and working only with a compact digital camera, I’m always searching for the perfect photo. I want my photo to preserve my memory of the moment or to serve as painting subject matter. I often try to frame the subject various ways using different angles, distances and lighting.

Experimentation is something I do with all my work. Clients always receive several design concept alternatives for every project. I always experiment with painting compositions and color. Even if I think I’ve perfected the design or painting I try variations. It forces the mind to concentrate on the essence of the expression or project and often yeilds surprisingly successful results. Thoughtful experimentation sharpens art and design skills and results in creative growth.

Have you experienced growth in your art and design skills by challenging yourself to create various solutions for a project?
